The POV for the most part is told from the perspective of the couple who has committed an act of murder to inherit a large amount of money. This added a sense of conflict, as part of this experience because it was hard not to feel as if you were supposed to root for the couple to get away with their crime with their POV being the most predominant.
On the other hand, they are not at all likeable people, especially in that their crime is one of pure greed for poor financial decisions. Having the characters investigating, or otherwise suspicious of the couple’s innocence is grounding in the sense that it reminds you as the reader who is the wrongful party and felt like a necessary reminder due to that conflict. However, the fact that I felt this at all is a testament to the authors writing skill and I really appreciated that it didn’t immediately feel like they were a total write-off as far as characters. Again, they are not particularly likeable but watching them deal with their guilt at potentially being caught and the dire straights they are trying to get themselves out of humanizes them.
On the other hand, this book definitely had a slow-moving plot. At times it felt like it was dragging and did get a bit tedious, but I was invested enough to find out what happened to these two individuals, particularly with the other factors thrown into the story to throw even more of a wrench in their plans. I did end up feeling like the book dragged on and just wanted to get to the point and finish it because I was pretty over the slow pace by the end.
All together this book ended up being an interesting concept with a number of threats thrown at the guilty couple to keep the plot moving and their harrowing situation worse as time went on, but it was pretty slow moving and took its time reaching the conclusion. I enjoyed it well enough to see it through to the end and was happy to get there.
