The Faceless Queen by Frankie Diane Mallis was such a unique concept with an enthralling magic system and world.

Samara was an interesting character to get to know with much devastation in her life that built the foundation of who she is in the current timeline of the story.

An exiled princess who has fallen from grace, she lives a very different life than the one she was born into and has many secrets to keep for the sake of her own life. I was so fascinated to learn of what she was, an Azete, and what it meant to be one. The Azete felt like such a unique identity, with many weaknesses to being one despite how cool it might seem to be able to shift ones form at will into anyone or anything.

It was a bit of a slow burn to get started, with the world being set up and the characters established. There was a lot of foundation to build to familiarize the reader with the important characters as well as the explain why the events to take place needed to happen, and also I feel to build a caring for the characters themselves so there were stakes for the reader. I did become deeply invested in Samara and Brennan, and the ties between them throughout the book so I feel like it was very successful.

The ending is such a cliffhanger and now I will be waiting impatiently for the next book in the duet because I need to see where the story takes us. I feel like the tension and stakes will amp up immensely in the second book because there are a lot of things that need to play out, especially with the way things ended. Can’t wait!
