A case that was supposed to have been resolved more than a decade previously is suddenly brought back to light when a podcaster who investigates old cases to prove the indicted person innocent decides that the wrong man was brought to justice.
Mia, whose testimony put Augustin Aiglar away, is shaken when she finds out someone is questioning the most traumatic experience of her life, an event that completely tore her family apart and resulted in the death of her cousin who she idolized at an already tough time in her life. Having what she saw as a teenager questioned, Mia decides she needs answers for herself, and revisits the place the murder took place, a castle with a bloody history with more than one murder taking place.
This was the kind of thriller that felt like it had it all. Not only is there the investigation in the present where Mia tries to dig up memories of her past to force herself to remember everything that happened and find closure in having put the right man away, but there is also the bloody history from prior to her cousin’s murder, which brought herself and her family to the castle in the first place all those years ago. The Aiglar family, who previously owned the castle, experienced their own horrifying history with the place when Gitta Aiglar and her husband were brutally murdered and the murderer was never found, which brought Mia’s aunt Iris to the place in Mia’s youth, to write a book about it. Not only are there these two mysteries however, but there is also the spooky atmosphere of a potentially haunted seeming castle that made for the most phenomenal setting and was so genuinely believable and immersive. This more than anything drew me into the book so completely.
Please Enjoy Your Stay really crept up on me, and I was so blown away by it in the end that I was almost shocked by how much I liked it. Although I desperately wanted answers to all of the questions the book created, I was almost sad to finish it because I was so completely drawn in to the story. This is a thriller that definitely gets a recommendation from me and I will be looking forward to more from the author.
