One unexpectedly pleasant surprise I found with this book was the horror-esque vibes that it contained. Events that take place very early in the book are painted quite horrifically, and it really leant a dark vibe to the book that I had not expected going into the book, which really worked for it and drew me in to the setting.
This book is certainly not for the faint of heart because it has many dark themes and the characters do not have an easy path to follow which makes for much tension and anxiety inducing moments.
The world that is built up throughout this first book in the Verran Isles series was truly captivating and I loved every moment of getting to know this world.
