The Break-Up Retreat by Camilla Sten was a thriller filled with insidious tension

The off-putting vibes of the setting were incredibly well done. I found myself tense whenever Isobel was out in the isolated, woodsy outdoors at the clinic on her own, with a constant sense of being watched that I could practically feel myself.

The setting lends itself so perfectly to the story which centers around a mystery about what is happening to clients of the clinic who disappear after spending time at the therapy retreat, and you can’t help but expect Isobel to be taken away at any moment.

I enjoyed this book well enough, but I did have some trouble with my attention span for it at times. It is a bit of a slow burn and at times it felt like there wasn’t a whole lot going on besides Isobel thinking about the scoop she was there to uncover and going about trying to find information, as well as the anxiety induced by the apparent anonymous warnings she is getting to stop looking for information and the fear brought on by the possibility of her cover being blown. Isobel herself was at times frustrating as she made silly mistakes and went about things in a manner that didn’t seem conducive to keeping her cover or felt easily avoidable.

All in all, it was a decent read, and I wanted answers to the many questions Isobel was seeking and that were brought up by the events of the book. The story evolves into something much more than it at first seems, though I’m not entirely sure what I thought about where it went as it had me questioning if it wholly made sense. But a solid book nevertheless as it kept me coming back until the end.
