I could not put Lucy Clarke’s The Castaways down

Wow. I was not expecting to be as drawn into this story as I ended up being, in fact it was one that I started and put back down after a chapter or two because I wasn’t immediately invested, but the second time I picked it up I ended up blasting through it because I couldn’t stop.

The tension remains so high throughout the course of the novel and it is written so masterfully as far as keeping the reader invested and desperate to know what happens next with the little chapter cliffhangers – of sorts – and the way that information is tantalizingly presented so you can’t help but be curious what it all means and what really happened as it’s hinted at.

The story is told through alternating chapters of two sisters, one in the present who is dealing with the disappearance of her sister after something unknown happened to the plane she was on. Years later this is still never resolved and Erin is left in limbo, unable to get over the loss of her sister and unwilling to accept that she’s really dead because the plane was never found. As a result she starts her own investigation when someone linked to the plane makes a sudden reappearance and could have the answers the family’s have all so desperately sought for years.

In the past we have Liza’s point of view which entails the day of and the days following the plane crash. Liza relates the harrowing story of survival for those who lived through the plane crash, as well as the hint of danger that comes from being with complete strangers who could have insidious intentions. No one appears to be entirely truthful about who they are and why they were on the flight, and the actual cause of the crash is unknown which creates even more tension.

Both points of view actually ended up being equally intriguing. Just when I would think I was desperate to continue with one sister’s story, something incredible intriguing would happen in the others chapter that had me wanting to continue what was going on with the one I was currently reading about. I actually could not stop reading this book because I was locked in on finding answers in both timelines. It was so well written and was such a perfect book to get me out of what has felt like a never ending slump of fighting to find something I actually want to read.

I can honestly say this is an author I will now be keeping an eye on because I enjoyed every minute of this book and was so incredibly invested in the story one the story got going.
